Cattle Council of Australia welcomes today's announcement from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources the Hon Barnaby Joyce that CCA is one of 27 industry bodies to receive funding from the Leadership in Agricultural Industries Fund (the Fund).
The Fund will assist CCA to transition to a directly elected peak industry body to improve its capacity to lead the beef industry and strengthen the long term viability of the sector. The new organisation will be directly accountable to producers with representation through a direct elect model, that encourages levy payer direct engagement through consultation and policy development.
Cattle Council of Australia President Howard Smith said "Cattle Council has been working hard with many industry stakeholders to implement change across the sector since 2014. It is a credit to the current government and the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce that their commitment to Australia's beef industry, beef producers and regional family businesses has remained strong".
"CCA has remained committed to the restructure and providing Australia's beef producers with better representation. We have undertaken incremental change over the past few years and with today's announcement we are now equipped with the resources to take the next big step" said Mr Smith.
"CCA would like to thank our members for standing by us, and all those who volunteer their time and energy, who have participated for so long, with such perseverance" Mr Smith said.
Troy Setter, Independent Chair of the Implementation Committee said "with today's announcement we have a clear pathway to implement a direct elect model that best serves the needs of our industry".
"We look forward to industry support as we implement this significant change" said Mr Setter.
CCA would like to thank the ongoing support of the State Farming Organisations AgForce Queensland, New South Wales Farmers’ Association, Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association, Pastoralists’ and Graziers’ Association of Western Australia, Victorian Farmers’ Federation, Western Australian Farmers Federation, Livestock South Australia and Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, and their members and looks forward to increasing engagement to all levy payers.
The Fund offered $5 million in grants to industry representative bodies to support initiatives to develop leadership capacity and capability within agricultural industries, as well as increase communication with farmers on questions regarding government policies, agricultural research, and development levies.
