Beefed up Japan access a win for Aussie farmers

The Cattle Council of Australia today said that the announcement of entry into force of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) on 15 January 2015 is welcome news for Australian beef producers.

Howard Smith, Cattle Council President, said that in finalising JAEPA, Australia was ahead of competitors in securing better market access for Australian beef.

“Japan continues to be an integral market for the Australian beef industry and Cattle Council sees opportunities to grow Japanese demand for Australian beef through the implementation of JAEPA,” Mr Smith said.

“The flow through benefits of reducing burden from the supply chain, through the implementation of JAEPA, should provide an opportunity for greater farm-gate prices, with modelling suggesting a boost in the annual gross value of Australian beef production by up to 7%.

“The implementation of JAEPA is also monumental because it paves the way for greater trade reform with Japan via the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership negotiations.

“The work of the Government, in relation to securing yet another opportunity for Australian beef, must be commended,” Mr Smith said.
