Meet our President

Tony Hegarty

Tony Hegarty was elected president of Cattle Council in 2018, having served as a Cattle Council board director for five years and as vice president since 2014.

Tony runs a family beef enterprise at Cassilis in the Hunter Valley of NSW. He has been involved in a range of primary production enterprises at grassroots and business management levels in the Hunter Valley since completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from Sydney University in 1980. Tony has also undertaken the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Foundations of Directorship Course.

He holds some 30 years extensive agricultural and environmental knowledge and experience in the Upper Hunter, along with community representation locally and throughout NSW.

Since its inception in 2014, he has been on the Board of Hunter Local Land Services. This body is responsible for the delivery of services and programs of Agricultural extension, Natural Resource Management, Animal Health, Biosecurity and Emergency Management, for landholders and community of the region.

Tony has been on the Steering Group that has developed and launched the Australian Beef Industry Sustainability Framework and is keen for this to continue as a demonstration of the progressive direction of our industry.

He is also a National Farmers’ Federation board director, a member of NSW Farmers’ Cattle Committee and, as Cattle Council president, is also a Red Meat Advisory Council director.
