Cattle Council of Australia was established in July 1979, bringing together for the first time all farmer organisations whose members had beef cattle enterprises.
The mission of the Cattle Council is to represent and progress the interests of Australian beef cattle producers.
Any beef producer in Australia can become a member of the Cattle Council of Australia. Membership is $100.00 + GST per individual (for those already members of a State Farming Organisation, the membership fee is waived).

Any organisation representing the interests of Australia's beef cattle producers is entitled to apply for organisational membership to Cattle Council. The Council currently has eight member organisations:
- NSW Farmers' Association
- Victorian Farmers' Federation
- Western Australian Farmers' Federation
- Pastoralists' & Graziers' Association of WA
- Tasmanian Farmers' & Graziers' Association
- Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association
