Research and Development is a central priority for Cattle Council.
Cattle Council’s policy on research and development has input from State member organisations and is enhanced through its close working relationship with the Northern Australian Beef Research Council (NABRC) and the recently restructured Southern Australian Meat Research Council (SAMRC).
R&D cattle transaction levy
From the $5 cattle transaction levy, $4.58 is allocated to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) to carry out the marketing ($3.66) and research ($0.92) activities for Industry.
Cattle Council's Research and Development Taskforce works on RD&E issues for the broader Council. MLA’s proposed research, development and extension activities are put under the microscope by the Cattle Council R&D Taskforce and other red meat industry representatives at annual RD&E meetings. This ensures industry's levies are being spent in the best possible way to deliver profitable outcomes to producers.
National Beef Production R,D and E strategy
The most significant milestone in Research and Development for the past year has been an agreement by the industry and State and Commonwealth Government research agencies to a National Beef Production R,D and E strategy.
Read about the National Primary Industries RD&E framework and how Cattle Council fits in, through its relationship with MLA, NABRC and SAMRC.
National Farmers' Federation 2050 committee
CCA is also participating in the NFF 2050 committee which has a strong emphasis on research and development. CCA and NFF will be looking for a reinvigorated approach to investment in rural research and development from major political parties in their 2010 election commitments.
Review of Rural Research and Development Corporations
A Productivity Commission review of Rural Research and Development Corporations is currently underway. The Commission will report to Government on its findings once complete. The inquiry will examine a broad scope of issues including the rationale for Government investment in rural research and development and the effectiveness and appropriate funding levels of the rural research and development corporation model. Cattle Council will be actively participating in this inquiry.
