Cattle Council believes that the Government’s proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is not an appropriate mechanism for the Australian beef industry.?Cattle Council believes that the CPRS is not appropriate for the following reasons:
- There is a lack of accurate, verifiable and cost effective emissions measurement and reporting mechanisms for the beef industry, making it expensive and problematic for the industry to participate;
- Due to a lack of demonstrable commercially-viable abatement and sequestration options, the beef industry has no way of reducing emissions and would be forced to reduce production to meet targets;
- The international greenhouse gas accounting rules, which currently reflect the net emissions contribution of agriculture, are not based on the most recent science; and
- Without cost-effective and accurate emissions measurement linked with commercially viable methods to reduce or offset emissions, the CPRS will jeopardise the international competitiveness of the Australian beef industry.
